BARRY
HALTERMAN (BLHRJH@aol.com)
I also worked for a company up here that produces CD interactive training for law enforcement. I learned a lot from them but didn't want to be tied down with a full time job, so I quit. Now I do webpages, lots of projects that Sharron has dreamed up for me, and totally enjoy the scenery and lifestyle up here. (Everyone smiles at you and speaks english too.) I really don't miss California at all.... only the people. Jim Shade and I came up with the idea for this website. I want to thank the DPOA for allowing us to post it on their turf. Would love to hear from any of you that care to drop me an email . (back to top) ( back to member's page )
I also got hooked on genealogy and now have over 60,000 names in my file: (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/a/Forrest-D-Shade/?Welcome=1085610943). I do a little woodworking and gardening, play slowpitch softball twice a week - and that's about it. *Joan is the real artist in the family; She is a CDA (Certified Decorative Artist) and has taught and published some of her artwork . My plans for the future ? just keep doin' what I'm doin' for as long as I can do it. (back to top) ( back to member's page )
I started collecting old farm tractors and restoring them. I have completed five to date and have several in waiting. We take them to parades, old farm shows, and tractor pulls. A couple of years ago we bought a mobil home and garage in Mohave Valley Arizona. It's about five miles north of Needles Ca. We spend the colder winter months there and our son Bob and his wife Julie use it in the summer time. I still enjoy riding my dirt bike when I can find someone to ride with. I get to do some fishing and hunting from time to time and enjoy that. Our
son Bob got married a couple of years ago. He and his wife are both high school
teachers. Bob is the Auto Shop teacher at Temescal Canyon High School in Elesnore.
_As for the future, we want to do more traveling. I want to find more old tractors
and other collectable farm junk. We are looking forward to being grandparents
some day. We have had several friends from the department stop by for visits and
are looking forward to more. Looking forward to hearing from you.
RICK
ROLLINS ( ShdwRdg@aol.com ) update:
01/4/04_ Firestone Colorado is small in population and growing at a rapid rate. The town is larger than Downey in area, about 25-30 square miles. They will be hiring an additional five officers this year and the budget has topped $1.5 million. Am looking forward to an additional 5-7 years in harness. Our Broncos are back in the play-offs. Cheer for them! (back to top) ( back to member's page )
PETE
STONE ( petespad2@cox.net ) My
time is pretty much taken up with 6 Grandchildren, gardening, fishing, and in
a weaker moment ran for the Board of Directors and unfortunatley won, I am also
attending Saddleback College taking computer courses, I realize that I always
used to say that "only Communists had computers", but I now enjoy them.
JERRY
GILBERT ( JGilb37740@aol.com ) My passion is still horses. Have 12 horses,a donkey, four dogs and a cat. I stay busy putting together trail rides all over the west. Just back from a week long ride in Utah. Darlene is still coaching skating and I still announce National and International skating events. I am on the Board of Directors of the Escondido Figure Skating Club, and on the Ethics Committee for United States Figure Skating. Somehow our social life revolves around the Military. I attend lots of Marine and Navy events. I also do a bit of fund raising for the Navy Marine Relief Association. My latest building project was putting a cowboy bar in the barn. Of course Darlene decorated it so it is a bit nicer than I had planned. Everyone is welcome if you happen to be in the area. (back to top) ( back to member's page )
MARGARET
BOWMAN( mabowman@verizon.net ) I'm still active serving my Country in the Army Reserves, yes, 27 years and the rank of Master Sergeant. I may soon be finding myself mobilized and on a stint with the U.S. Army. I'm currently assigned to the Casaulty Affairs Office, in Alexandria, VA. Our office handles the coordination/notification, between the Army & the families of casaulty victims, POW's, MIA's and other injured soldiers. Yeah Tim & I

of you doing well and enjoying retirement.
STEVE
DOUGLASS ( stevdoug@comcast.net ) I left the D.A.'s office and continued the investigation while working for two law firms. This led to a $100 million class action law suit against the same suspect, the current U.S. Ambassador to Spain. Liz developed some serious health problems and we decided it was time to retire for good. We
moved back to Vancouver, Wa. We travel when we can and I spend a lot of time doing
landscaping work on our property. We enjoy seeing the wildlife and all the things
to do in the NorthWest. All four of our children have moved nearby. Our 3 daughters
have married and we have 2 grandchildren.

JOE
EGGERT ( claybuster@verizon.net
)
PAT LANGENHOVEL ( pat.langenhovel@accessbusinessgroup.com ) I am currently working industrial security for Access Business Group, Nutrilite Division, Lakeview, California, bus. ph# (909)928-6560. I've been here 9+ years. It's a good job, interesting work (not a "Stanley" the night watchman position) and four day work week. Half of the guys I work with are ex-cops. A couple of them you may know: Paxton Reinecker, Judge Leon Emerson's bailiff at the old DMC and a more recent addition, Dave "Rosebud" Wright. We all sit around a swap stories about the good old days and our recent aches and pains. Since I retired I've had two triple coronary bypass operations and 4 stints which didn't last more that a few weeks each time. I'm in good health now though
DEAN SHELTON ( dshelton36@comcast.net ) II retired from South Lake Tahoe in 1991, went to work for the state until 98, did some interim chief jobs, and was appointed this Feb. by our new Gov. as Chairman of the California Gambling Control Commission. We license all card rooms, prop players, and have some over sight with tribal gaming. The later is growing everyday as far as our responsibilities go. The toughest job I have ever had, all my employees are accountants, CPA's, and attorneys. Who would have thought. We moved to Sacramento in 92, really enjoy the area. Our youngest daughter lives her with her husband and three children, so that keeps grandmother busy. You will have to catch me up on all the old timers we worked with and where they are. When we are young we have little time for this, then as we grow older, people just seem to count more and more.
JERRY STEVENS( 2fop@frontiernet.net ) After leaving the pd in 73, I started my own business in the aerospace industry. After becoming very hungry I went to work for Wells Fargo Bank as a security specialist. Twelve years later I retired, and my wife and I moved to Arkansas to be closer to the grand kids. After six years us Yankees moved to where we now reside in Lake Havasu City Arizona. Since living here Linda and I have caught a lot of fish, and drank a little bit of beer in the hot sun. We enjoy the river in our 19 ft Eliminator (big block included) and the grand kids can come and visit us for boat rides. Nice to be back in touch. Jerry
JAN BOWEN ( casinomama54@yahoo.com ) Would love to here from any of you that I worked with at the good old PD. I am loving it here and sometimes it's hard for me to remember I'm not on vacation, ha ha. Well as the old saying goes "Out of sight, Out of Mind" well it's not true. I think of all of you with many fond memories, those retired and still employed. So you all take care, Love, Jan
JOHN BAKER ( snoopdawg50@hotmail.com ) Left CA in 1989 for Colorado and been trying to get back ever since, but since my wife and son are Colorado natives (rare breed) I may be sentenced to air travel to see the ocean. I hold a PH.D. in psychology and as Dr. Prosecution I've satisfied my tasted for criminal investigations and mild adrenaline bursts. I also have an interest in a security systems integration company. Mountain biking, weight training and girl watching are still my favorite hobbies--my family is my passion. Greetings to all and best wishes.
JIM HUDDLESTON( jhuddlestona76@yahoo.com ) Charter member of department. Retired 1968 on disibility from motorcycle acident. Rank at retirement, Sergeant.
JOHN ABBEY(:jabbey@abbeygroup.com ) I am proud to have been a member of the Downey Police Department from 1966 until 1985. Starting as a CommOp, I worked (some will disagree with the term "worked") in patrol, traffic, and detectives as a Policeman (yes, we were Policemen then and I have badge "64" to prove it), Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. Only after leaving Downey for greener pastures did I realize the exceptional quality of the people and the Department. Starting under the leadership of Ivan Robinson and Loren Morgan, we all (albeit unknowingly) met standards well beyond those in other agencies. In this roster I see many of the people that made DPD what it was. At what appeared to be the end of that era, I accepted a Chiefs position in Silicon Valley. Following a Grand Jury investigation which resulted in the departure of the former Chief (subsequently booked a couple of times) and the indictment of a couple of Watch Commanders, we rebuilt the department into a respectable agency which was described as the most "technologically advanced" agency of the time. PC's in police cars, crime analysis in the field, and digital mugshots were a big deal in 1987. In 1989 I retired and founded Abbey Group Consultants, first in Carmel, California, moving to Nevada City, California. Begun as a "futures" consulting firm, our firm worked with clients such as Motorola, Andersen Consulting, AT&T, and Hewlett Packard to forecast the future of public safety technology. Our innovations of the time are now the mainstream technologies in the police car, police station, and crime labs. In the mid 1990's we became developers and "integrators" of public safety technology. We now have a couple of dozen full time people in Sacramento, Incline Village, Central Florida, and outposts across the fruited plain. My wife Patricia and I live in Incline Village NV (North shore of Lake Tahoe) and commute to our classic mahogany Chris Craft in Sausalito CA. Our son JD recently graduated from college in San Diego and our daughter Molly is in her last year of law school in Seattle. I sincerely envy those of you who are truly retired and hope to join you soon. Thanks, John
TOM FREEDLAND(TFreedland@aol.com ) I spent 5 years with Downey PD, from 1979 to 1984, before making a lateral transfer to LASD. I eventually dropped to reserve status and returned to school, receiving my chiropractic degree in 1988. I continued working as a reserve with LASD until I moved to Portland, Oregon in 1993. I now serve as the Reserve Lieutenant for the Tigard Police Department (suburb of Portland), and will have 28 years of law enforcement in November 2005. In addition to treating patients, my practice involves medical-legal consulting and health care fraud identification. They actually pay me to travel all over the West Coast, including Alaska and Hawaii, to lecture and perform second opinion exams. Roz and I have been married for 21 years; the marriage can now legally drink. My daughter Hannah will be 13 in October 2005. She has the ability to warm my heart and tick me off, all in the same breath. I believe that's part of her job description. I still play racquetball a couple times a week, despite having my back rebuilt twice. I still collect and restore antique telephones. I also have a rather extensive collection of videos and DVDs of classic television shows from the 1950s and 1960s - the good old days when men were men and only kissed their horses. More recently, Roz and I have discovered cruising as a vacation. So far we have done Alaska and New England. We will be cruising around the Hawaiian Islands later this year, and hope to visit Australia and New Zealand in 2007. I still have found memories of many of the people I worked with at Downey PD. I have tried to stay in touch with some of them, although I have lost contact with others. This group may restore many of those lost links. I have fond memories of the high jinks that Bill Gough and I pulled while he was my FTO. John Baker and I raised Hell a number of times. Mark Dryer slammed a patrol unit door on my hand "because he didn't like me." (Sorry Mark - I'm sure you remember the joke.) Jim Ply and I realized that if you volunteer to transport someone to county you won't get any radio calls. Mike Westry taught me the art of the sublime and how to chew your breakfast at Mary's while you are asleep. I took alot of field skills I learned while working at Downey with me, and they have served me well over the years. Thanks to all of you that I worked with. I learned something from all of you.
ROD ENGLERT (englert@europa.com ) DPD FROM 63 TO 69. MOVED TO PORTLAND AND RETIRED AS CHIEF DEPUTY OF MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE IN 95. CURRENTLY CONSULT AND LECTURE ON HOMICIDE INVESTIGATIONS FOCUSING ON SCENE RECONSTRUCTION
ANDREW ROSS(msr971@cox.net ) Originally from Scotland. Moved to the United States in 1980. I was a reserve officer at Montebello PD for a little over a year before being picked up, full-time, by Downey in '95. In '02, I went to Laguna Beach PD, where I am currently employed as the Crimes Against Persons detective. Unfortunately, I started a bit late (30), so all I can do is daydream about retirement ... 15 more years to go! I'm not as active as I used to be in the bagpipe world, but still knock out a tune now and again.
